Projects
Six major projects on which I worked abroad in a senior role as electrical site manager. Three are additionally documented in contemporary publications; those texts are transcribed in full under Documents.
Isfahan · Iran
River water treatment for an oil refinery
- Client
- ABB-Swiss — Brown Boveri / Sulzer consortium, for the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC)
- Location
- Isfahan, Iran
- Role
- Electrical site manager
- Scope
- Turnkey water treatment plant converting river water from the Zayandeh Rud into process and cooling water for the refinery
- Key figures
- 1300 m³/h treatment capacity · 25 km pipeline to the industrial water network · five parallel reaction tanks · 450 m³/h drinking-water expansion stage
Raw water is drawn from the Zayandeh Rud at the edge of Isfahan and fed to the pump station through two 800 mm pipelines. The plant had to be designed so that a reliable water supply to the refinery was maintained even in fully automatic operation — outages are unacceptable for continuous refinery operation.
Minsk · Belarus
German federal housing programme in the former Soviet Union
- Client
- Weidleplan Consulting, under the housing programme of the Federal Republic of Germany
- Location
- Minsk, Belarus
- Role
- Site supervision for German consulting firms — described in the press report as “Watchman”
- Scope
- Supervision of construction work, drawing approval and invoice verification on a large housing site
- Key figures
- 725 apartments completed · around 2,700 workers on site
The project ran under early-1990s conditions in the former Soviet Union: hyperinflation, unreliable material supply and theft on site were part of the site manager's daily work. Completion was regarded as exceptionally fast.
Rasht · Iran
TAVANIR combined-cycle power plant, 1170 MW
- Client
- Preussag / NOELL, for TAVANIR
- Location
- Rasht, Iran
- Role
- Electrical site manager, Balance of Plant
- Scope
- All ancillary systems of the power plant under the heading Balance of Plant — main and auxiliary systems, steelwork, building services and building equipment, covering the mechanical, instrumentation-and-control and electrical shares
- Key figures
- 1170 MW total output · six gas turbines, three steam turbines · 230 kV substation · three oil storage tanks · 11 km deep-well pipeline
The largest of the projects documented here. The delivery scope included the fuel supply system, the cooling circuits for the six gas and three steam turbines, the complete fire detection and extinguishing systems, and the treatment of fresh water as well as domestic and industrial wastewater.

Abuja · Nigeria
Central Bank of Nigeria
- Client
- Bilfinger + Berger, for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
- Location
- Abuja, Nigeria
- Role
- Electrical site manager
- Scope
- Electrical installations for the administration building, its car park and the emergency power supply
- Key figures
- approx. 65,000 m² office area · 600 parking spaces · emergency power with 5 × Caterpillar diesel
An administrative building in the Nigerian capital where the emergency power supply was the critical part of the electrical design: five Caterpillar diesel gensets had to be delivered to site, moved into position and commissioned.
Riyadh – Qassim · Saudi Arabia
Water transmission line Riyadh – Qassim, 383 km
- Client
- ABB & n+p
- Location
- Riyadh to Qassim, Saudi Arabia
- Role
- Electrical site manager
- Scope
- Water transmission line with two pumping stations and five terminals, including control systems and power supply for the stations
- Key figures
- 383 km line length · 2 pumping stations · 5 terminals · up to 415,000 m³ of drinking water a day · serving more than 100 towns and villages
The line secures the drinking water supply of more than a hundred towns and villages between Riyadh and Qassim. Along the whole route, two pumping stations and five terminals had to be electrically equipped and commissioned.
Xiaoshan · China
Xiaoshan power plant, 2 × 350 MW
- Client
- Siemens AG & n+p
- Location
- Xiaoshan, China
- Role
- Technical Field Advicer — technical advice and support to the client
- Scope
- Siemens supplied the steam combined cycle units with equipment; assembly and commissioning were carried out by the client, supported by Siemens technical staff
- Key figures
- 2 × 350 MW unit output
A different role from the other projects: not executing site management but technical support to a client carrying out assembly and commissioning itself. The work accordingly lay in advice, checking execution quality and resolving technical details on site.
